AC⚡DC is hosting four rockin’ flex activities in April via Zoom! We will present course design ideas that will electrify your summer break. The links will take you to the zoom room for each session.

⚡4/12 - 10 AM and 11 AM: AI and IDEA2 

AI is a powerful tool however it is not always a bias-free resource. These biases are important to recognize when using AI in our classes. Join us as we explore AI biases and how we might use IDEA2 principles to guard against them in our work.

  • Zoom Room for AI and IDEA2
  • Presenters: Mandeep Grewal and Leslie Henson
  • 10 - 11 AM: We will begin with a presentation on bias in AI.
  • 11 AM - noon: Then there will be a one-hour discussion of how to avoid replicating these biases in our teaching.
  • Feel free to attend either one or both portions of this workshop

⚡4/26 - 10 AM: UDL and neurodivergence

This workshop will focus on supporting neurodivergent (ND) students. Topics will include an overview of neurodivergence and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) along with specific ideas to support ND learners.

⚡4/26 @ 11 AM: Strategies for helping struggling students

In this sessions, participants will focus on how they can increase equity and success in their courses by reflecting on how this semester went and using that in planning for next semester.

Modern Classroom Project

How do you reach all students when you have some that are ready to be independent or do harder work and others need a lot of your time?  Modern Classroom Project (modernclassrooms.org) is a structure and routines set up in your classroom (online or face to face) that allow adaptability in your course.  Once students understand the process they can continue whether they are advanced, needing more support, you have a substitute, move class to a different modality or other unforeseen circumstances.  The structure is based on three ideas of blended instruction (videos and in person), self paced learning (within units/timeframes), and mastery grading.  I have been using this face to face before I knew it was a thing and working to use it in my online classes as well.

Authentic Assessment and Portfolios

Looking for new ways to assess student progress toward outcomes? Curious about authentic assessments and what they could look like in your class? In this session, we’ll explore what makes an assessment authentic. I’ll share several examples and resources to learn more about designing Porfolio projects. We’ll also tap into our community wisdom for more ideas on designing and implementing authentic and adaptable assessments of student learning.

Come learn this rapidly adaptable approach to structuring your Canvas shell and managing content efficiently. Use what you have and build what’s missing in a format that’s ready for anything. The result is a system that reduces the time to adapt and increases student success.

Finding Free and Adaptable Textbooks for Your Classes

Open Educational Resources (OER) are freely available for everyone. And, they can be adapted to suit your particular class and teaching style. We will cover some search strategies for finding OER and have a quick primer on licensing. You will have the opportunity to get help finding OER for your classes during the second half of the webinar.

Humanizing Online Courses with Video

Videos are a fabulous way to humanize a Canvas course, allowing our students to feel more connected with us as their instructors, and enabling multisensory instruction that students can speed up, slow down, pause, and rewatch as they need. In this workshop, we will share how we use videos in our courses. We will share tips for creating high-quality videos, we'll introduce several tools we have access to at Butte for creating videos, and we'll demonstrate how to use Canvas Studio to create, caption, and share videos, and even create a quiz embedded in a video right in Canvas!

Community Building Beyond Discussion Boards

Have you been trying to think of ways to foster community and facilitate effective student-to-student interaction in classes beyond Canvas discussions? You are not alone! Join us as we discuss alternatives to discussions that you can use in your class to encourage peer-to-peer interaction. In this round-table workshop, we will share successes and challenges to consider with community-building alternatives to discussions we've been trying in our classes -- including icebreakers, peer review, the Canvas Collaborations and Groups tools, and tools outside of Canvas -- and we'll be eager to make plenty of space to discuss your ideas and questions too!

Welcoming Students Before the Semester Starts

Our experience has demonstrated that students feel welcome, supported, and better prepared to succeed in our courses of all modalities when we reach out early to introduce ourselves and provide course information before students have access to Canvas or the first day of class. This communication can include a welcome email, course schedule, online syllabus, and/or welcome video. We will share several examples of early outreach that you can adapt for your own courses. Please join us for a round table discussion to share successes, challenges and solutions. We will discuss what can be included, and when and how it can be shared with students.

Ungrading: Strategies for Equitable Grading

Our current grading systems often measures privilege and personality rather than knowledge and skills. This makes grades an ineffective measure of student learning. We will discuss strategies that can help equitize grading and improve student success. These include both simple changes you can make within your current course design and more comprehensive alternatives to traditional grading.
